The Inc. 5000 list represents a one-of-a-kind, annual look at America’s fast-growing private companies. Many esteemed entrepreneurs and incomparable global brands gained their initial national exposure through the Inc. 5000 list, such as Mark Cuban, Jenny Craig, Chobani, Under Armour, Patagonia, and so many more. Something all these leaders have in common, in addition to ranking on the Inc. 5000 list, is the fierce, ingenuitive spirit that took them from startup to titan.

Making the Cut

With millions of businesses applying each year, you may be wondering how a company ends up on the Inc. 5000 list. The basic qualifications state that for a company to be considered, it must be:

• Based in the U.S.
• Privately held
• For-profit
• Independent—not a subsidiary or division of other companies 

Potential applications get trimmed past that though. “Nearly every type of business shows up on the 5000,” says Scott Omelianuk. However, while millions of companies dream about making the Inc. 5000 list, not everyone can apply. To be considered for the Inc. Media prestigious Inc. 5000 list in 2023, a business’s minimum revenue in 2022 had to at least reach $2 million.

Once a company makes the cut for the application process, growth rates are used to determine company rankings on the Inc. 5000 list. That is, if they make it at all. This competition grows steeper each year as companies across every industry are bringing their best game.

“Making the Inc. 5000 means you’re among the top companies in the country in terms of growth,” explains Scott Omelianuk. “That means, using historical metrics, that most of you are in the top half percent of all privately owned companies. Better than 99.5% of everyone else. That’s really something to celebrate.”
